THE MIXTAPE AND THE INTERNET : AFRICAN ARTISTS' MOST UNDERUSED TOOLS

Before iPod playlists, I had a wonderful collection of mix tapes, self-made, labours of love – radio cassettes with a self-titled sticker. Since then, the mixtape has evolved from a personal music compilation to the current marketing tool for artists to make themselves known, promote their brand and speak to their fans.

In 2011, two of my favourite albums were official mixtapes. Frank OceansNostalgia, Ultra and The WeekndsHouse of Balloons. It was these mixtapes that brought the artists to my attention and subsequently made me a fan. Im on lookout for new material from these artists, from videos, to music and even blogs.

Some artists use mixtapes to avoid having to go through the regular media formula of managed promotion, interviews and back to back appearances before presenting work and tour dates that they know their fans will appreciate, and pay money for. Its a known fact that both Ocean and half-EthiopianTesfaye arent big on interviews; they've kept low profiles while still managing to collaborate with major artists like Jay-Z and Drake and continue to build significant fan bases.

Mixtapes have always played a strong role in pop and Hip-hop culture. As early as the seventies, artists like Africa Bambaataa were releasing mixtapes. It was the strongest link a fan could have with an artist; live performance recordings that would allow the listener to truly evaluate the artists skills. DJs would show their mixing skills, rappers would show their lyricism without heavy studio work on the tracks – it was all very raw and creative. Yet it took a while for the mixtape culture to take off on the continent, I believe the "pioneers" in Africa are Hip-hop artists.

Getting rid of man boobs just isn't as easy while a lot of people may consider. We live in an imply community, consequently a dude with boobs can't be predicted to do specially nicely culturally. Everything You Need To Understand About Your Timing Belt And How To Replace It Yourself

By F Floyd Khumalo

Anyone who has ever had a car knows what it is like to have to come up with money for repairs. It is one thing for the standard oil changes, and tune ups, but there are other things, such as belts, that occasionally need fixing.

The timing belt will be one, but being aware what it is, is no grounds for knowing whether it needs to be changed. You almost certainly do not want to be surprized by a damaged timing belt when you're out driving on the highway. You can well be pushing the envelope if you have had your car or truck for some time. Typically a timing belt lasts between 60,000 miles up to 100,000 miles, which is a pretty wide gap. If you had read your owner's guide, you would probably have discovered this, but who does before something goes wrong? Despite the fact that a timing belt might fail at any time, you are able to keep from being stranded by staying on top of things.

Ten Worst Movie and Music Celebrity Airplane Crashes

It's not a pleasant subject, but airplane crashes have claimed the lives of a number of celebrities through the years. Movie and music personalities have been especially hard hit. Here are ten celebrity plane crashes that rocked the entertainment world.

Patsy Cline, March 5, 1963 - Tennessee Tragedy

Country music singer Patsy Cline (1932-1963) was returning home to Nashville following a benefit concert in Kansas City, Kansas, when her private plane went down in a storm near Camden, Tennessee, on March 5, 1963. Also on board the ill-fated single engine Piper Comanche were the 30-year-old Cline's manager and the plane's pilot Ramsey "Randy" Hughes (1928-1963), along with fellow Grand Ole Opry performers Lloyd "Cowboy" Copas (1913-1963) and Harold "Hawkshaw" Hawkins (1921-1963). Said Civil Defense official Dean Brewer later of the effort to recover the bodies in a heavily wooded area known as Fatty Bottom, "There's not enough to count...They're all in small pieces."

Buddy Holly, February 3, 1959 - The Day the Music Died

Charles Hardin "Buddy" Holly (1936-1959) was on tour as a featured performer in the Winter Dance Party in early 1959. Following a performance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, a private plane was chartered to take Holly and fellow musicians Ritchie Valens (1941-1959) and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson (1930-1959) to their next stop on the tour. The single engine Beechcraft Bonanza, piloted by 21-year-old Roger Peterson, crashed in a farmer's field shortly after takeoff on February 3, 1959, killing all on board. The bodies of Holly and Valens rested near the mangled airplane, while Richardson was hurled over a fence and Peterson remained trapped inside. Singer Don McLean later immortalized the tragedy in his 1971 ballad "American Pie," which he called "the day the music died."

New Jersey Proposes Merging Rutgers-Camden With Rowan University

The plan to merge Rutgers University-Camden with Glassboro-based Rowan University (about 20 miles away) is meeting resistance, or at least shock and outrage by students at the law school.  Various press outlets interviewing students for their articles has them expressing concern that the Rutgers name would go away.  It's a brand, after all, and students are attached to it for all kinds of reasons.  Current students wonder if the Rutgers name would be on their diplomas, something that helps them distinguish themselves in the job market.  One article quotes a student:

"Let's face it, our main priority is getting a job," said Kevin Miller, a 23-year-old law student, explaining his attachment to the Rutgers name.
